Financial Reports

Mr. Kennedy made a motion to approve the financial reports as submitted for the period ending May 31, 2010; motion was seconded by Mr. Lindsay; all in favor.

Project Status Report

Cultural Arts Commission

Mr. Stuber reported that Mayor Heitzler has proposed an ordinance to establish a Cultural Arts Commission.  He has been asked to research this and make a proposal to the City.  The way he envisions this is as an Advisory Board comprised of people with interests in drama, music, art, poetry and culinary arts who would come under the umbrella of the Recreation Commission.

Mr. Glass started a discussion of how festivals and the arts would be funded.  Mr. Stuber stated that the City has an established budget for the arts plus there are grants available.  Mr. Lindsay expressed his opinion that the seed money for the Cultural Arts Commission should come from the City.

Mr. Kennedy stated there might be money earmarked for recreation from the methane gas from the Berkeley County landfill.  Mr. Stuber said that this has been discussed but no solid plans for how the money will be distributed are known.  Mayor Heitzler will keep us informed on this topic.

Mr. Terre suggested we look into offering cooking classes or a murder mystery dinner.

Fabulous Fourth in the Creek

Mr. Stuber updated the Commission on the plans for the annual festival.  We will be using the new property adjacent to the Community Center for overflow parking this year.  Mr. Fesler will be working with the police department on a traffic flow pattern.

New Business

Parks Report:

Mr. Stuber reported that the City had finished the new Boulder Bluff Park and the Recreation Department will be responsible for maintaining it.

We had some additional vandalism at Dennis Park.  It was suggested we look into wireless cameras at that location.

The police officer that was living at Dogwood Park has moved, but his trailer is still there.  His father-in-law owns the trailer and lives out-of-state.  The Commission requested that Mr. Stuber notify him to move the trailer or we will put a lien on it.  Mr. Stuber was also asked to look into getting a “dummy” police car to park at Dogwood Park to deter vandalism.

Recreation Report:

Mrs. Heiselman reported that the gymnastics floor at the Casey Center had been repaired for safety purposes.  The gymnastics program has grown significantly over the past two years and they are using the entire gym now.

Mr. Glass asked the staff to look into how baseball games are scheduled and possibly utilize more week nights and less Saturday game times.

Mrs. Heiselman reported that the Outdoor Movie was well attended for a first time event.  She estimated the crowd at about 350 people.

Before the vote, Mr. Terre asked the staff to look into why certain coaches are just playing certain kids all the time.  He said he was approached by several parents about the playing rules.

After a discussion of the playing requirements for the different sports, Mr. Terre said he would refer these questions to the staff in the future.

The vote on the motion was taken at 6:55 p.m., all in favor.
