Commission & City Sign Contract for Recreation

The Goose Creek Recreation Commission and the City of Goose Creek have signed a contract under which the City will assume control as the provider of recreation services.  The transition of services will begin on May 1, 2008 and be completed by December 31, 2008.

Under the new contract, the City will provide recreation services to the residents of the City and the Recreation District on an equal basis. The Recreation Commission will remain active and serve as advisors to City Council on matters concerning recreation. The Recreation Commission will pay the City the recreation millage it gathers from district residents at the same rate City residents pay for recreation services through their normal City taxes.

What is the Goose Creek Recreation District?
This is a special purpose tax district established in 1966 by an act of the General Assembly of South Carolina and led by a seven member Commission appointed by the governor upon the recommendation of Berkeley County Council. The major subdivisions that comprise the district are Beverly Hills, Forest Lawn, Sedgefield, Willowbrook, St. James Estates and Harbour Lake.

The Goose Creek Recreation Commission and the City of Goose Creek signed a contract agreement on Monday, August 19, 2002, laying the framework for the construction of a new community center, and the renovation of the existing recreation center.
